The short version

Other members see your first name, your photo and the few lines you write about yourself. That is all they can ever see.

We do not hold your last name, your postal address or your phone number. We used to, when a coin was a metal object that had to reach a letterbox. It is not any more, so we deleted those fields rather than go on asking.

What we collect

Always: your first name, your email address, where you live as one answer of two, and the date you joined.

Only if you add them: a photo and a few lines about yourself. Both are public to other members.

Automatically: basic app and device information needed to keep the service running and secure; a notification address for your phone, if you allow notifications; and an invite code, if you share one.

Measuring how the app is used

We count what happens in the app - how many people sign up, and which screens are opened - so we can see what works and what does not. Google Analytics for Firebase does the counting for us.

It is anonymous: it is never linked to your name, your email address or your account, and it never includes anything you write. We do not sell it, and we do not share it with advertisers.

How your details are separated

Your public profile and your private details are stored as two separate records.

The public one holds a first name, a photo, your few lines and your monthly state, and any signed-in member can read it. The private one holds your email address and where you live, and only you can read it. This is enforced by the database itself, not merely by the app.

Who else sees anything

Nobody. Coins are records inside the app, so there is no mailing house, no printer and no courier in the picture at all.

The one exception is a prize: if you win one we will need a postal address in order to send it, and we will ask you for it then and use it for that one parcel. We do not hold it before that and we do not keep it afterwards.

Your email address

It is how you sign in, and it is how we would reach you if you won a prize. We ask you to confirm it, but nothing in the app waits on that - your coins arrive whether you confirm it or not.

If you sign in with Google, Google gives us your name and your email address and tells us the address is confirmed. We never see your Google password, and we ask Google for nothing else.

We do not sell it, we do not share it, and we do not add you to any mailing list.

Payments

Payments are handled by the app store. We never see or store your card details.

Notifications

If you allow them, we send a notification when someone gives you a coin, sends you a heart, a good thought or a chat message, and a daily reminder if you ask for one. Each kind can be turned off separately in the notification settings on your phone.

Chat, hearts and good thoughts

Chat messages are stored on our servers so both people in the chat can read them. We do not read them, unless one of you reports the chat. Hearts are counted, and the count is shown on your profile. Good thoughts are fixed phrases, and you can delete any you receive. When you delete your account, your chats, hearts and good thoughts are deleted with it.

Online now

While Be Good is open on your phone, other members see a green ring around your photo. To do this we store the time you last had the app open. It is cleared as soon as you leave the app.

How long we keep things

While your account is open, and then deleted when you close it.

WHAT SURVIVES, AND ONLY IF YOU PAID. If you ever held a membership we keep one short billing record after you leave: which membership you had, when it started and last renewed, how many coins you gave and were given as numbers, and your email address stored as a one-way hash rather than as an address we could read or write to.

It is there so that we can answer you if you write to us months later asking what happened to a payment, and so that we can account for what we charged if we are asked to. It holds no name, no picture, none of the words you wrote, no message you sent, and no record of who you chose or who chose you.

If you never paid, nothing at all is kept.

Coins you gave to other people stay in their collections with your name removed, because they belong to the people who were given them.

Your choices

You can see everything we hold about you on the Private details screen. It is a short screen, and that is the point.

You can delete your account, and everything in it, from Settings. If you would rather we did it for you, write to us and we will.

Children

Be Good is for people 18 and over. We do not knowingly keep information about anyone younger, and we delete it if we find it.

Contact

Write to us from the Contact screen in the app, or by email. A person reads every message.
